A Dutch court has sentenced Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev to 64 months in prison. His involvement in $1.2 billion worth of money laundering activities is the reason for the ruling. On Tuesday, May 14, the verdict was given at the s-Hertogenbosch court.

The ruling above against the creator of Tornado Cash marks an important turning point in the legal fight against unethical financial practices in the cryptocurrency industry. In addition, Pertsev’s indictment describes a pattern of money laundering from July 9, 2019, to August 10, 2022. He is accused of using the Tornado Cash platform to facilitate transactions with illicit origins throughout this time.
Furthermore, the court determined that Pertsev was involved in the illicit actions and further underlined that he ought to have known the transactions were illegal. This decision establishes a standard that may affect future cases involving additional Tornado Cash developers.
The cryptocurrency mixer’s co-developers, Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, are also accused of money laundering and breaking US sanctions. Storm was captured last year Following Tornado Cash’s inclusion on the US sanctions registry. His trial is set for September 2024. Semenov, though, is still at large; as of right now, no arrests have been recorded.
