Ethereum core developers are finalizing the scope of the network’s next major upgrade, which is expected to significantly expand data availability for layer-2 rollups and drive transaction fees lower across the ecosystem.
The upgrade builds on last year’s Dencun hard fork, which introduced “blobs” — a dedicated space for rollup data. Early testnet results suggest the new changes could multiply blob capacity several times over.
“Cheaper L2 fees unlock entirely new categories of applications,” one developer said. “Microtransactions, onchain gaming, social apps — things that were priced out before suddenly become viable.” A mainnet date has not yet been confirmed.
